Sturmgewehr 57

The Sturmgewehr 57 (Stgw 57) was a Swiss automatic rifle, which served as the standard infantry weapon of the Swiss Army from the late 1950s. It was developed as a robust and accurate firearm suitable for mountainous and defensive combat operations, reflecting Switzerland’s military doctrine focused on homeland defense.

The development of the Stgw 57 began after World War II, when Switzerland sought a modern replacement for the outdated Model 1911 and K31 rifles. Engineers at SIG (Schweizerische Industrie Gesellschaft) designed a weapon that combined elements of semi-automatic and automatic rifles. After a series of tests and refinements, the weapon was officially adopted in 1957 as the Sturmgewehr 57. The rifle was chambered for 7.5×55 mm Swiss (GP11) ammunition, a powerful cartridge offering excellent accuracy and ballistic performance at long distances. The Stgw 57 had a 24-round magazine capacity and featured both semi-automatic and fully automatic firing modes. It used a roller-delayed blowback system, similar to the German G3 rifle, which ensured high reliability and precision.

The weapon was constructed from high-quality steel and aluminum alloys, giving it exceptional durability. It featured an integrated bipod, enhancing stability during firing, and could be equipped with a telescopic sight, making it suitable for marksman duties. The total length of the weapon was 1,100 mm, with a 600 mm barrel, and it weighed approximately 6 kg without the magazine, making it relatively heavy but highly stable when firing.

During its service in the Swiss Army, the Stgw 57 proved to be an extremely accurate and reliable rifle, ideal for combat in harsh conditions. However, its weight and length made it less practical for modern mobile warfare. By the late 1980s and early 1990s, it was gradually replaced by the more modern SIG SG 550, which was lighter and better suited to contemporary infantry requirements.

Even after being phased out of military service, the Stgw 57 remained popular among sports shooters and collectors, thanks to its exceptional craftsmanship and accuracy. Many of these rifles were converted into civilian semi-automatic versions and are still used today for long-range shooting sports. With its robust design and Swiss precision engineering, the Stgw 57 ranks among the finest military rifles of its era.

Výborný zážitek! Oceňuji především velký a zajímavě seskládaný výběr zbraní obsahující i méně běžné a dostupné kusy - třeba střelba z kulometu ve mně zanechala silný dojem. Kvituji opravování mých chyb při držení zbraně a střelbě samotné ze strany instruktorů, kteří byli i ochotni zodpovědět mé dotazy co jak funguje, odkud zbraň pochází, jaká je její historie apod. Rád někdy zopakuji. Žádné zásadní nedostatky nebyly, možná jen aspoň trošku počítat s časovou flexibilitou, kdy jsem na své dráze dostřílel pistole, ale na vedlejší dráze s kulomety / puškami ještě dokončoval svou střelbu jiný klient.
